Our Curriculum

The staff and Governors at King Street believe that offering the best curriculum to our children is of the highest importance. A stimulating and engaging curriculum motivates learners, provokes curiosity and ensures that the learning is fun. We aim to ensure that we build upon children’s thirst for information and we are very proud to have developed a curriculum which stimulates our children into asking searching questions, shapes their learning and enables them to develop into independent thinkers and learners. We realise the importance of every minute of every day that they spend with us, and fill it with experiences that ‘think outside the box’ in their creativity and innovation. 

Developing the holistic child is of upmost importance and, with this in mind, our broad and balanced curriculum encompasses academic subjects, sport, music and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education. We use the outdoors as an opportunity to show children that learning is not contained to a classroom but that the environment is a rich adventure playground.

We are particularly proud of the respect and care that our children show for one another, the environment and the community around us.
We provide a wide range of activities and opportunities for our children to ensure they make progress academically, socially, physically and morally. We endeavour, through our school curriculum, to stimulate our pupils’ interests and imagination and motivate them through a high standard of teaching and learning to realise their potential and achieve success.

Our community is at the heart of our teaching and learning, and encourage involvement with parents, the local churches, and businesses, amongst others, to add an extra dimension to our children’s learning.
Throughout the school opportunities are regularly taken to extend the curriculum beyond our statutory requirements. These include:

Visitors, musicians, and themed assemblies by visitors.

Use of the outside classroom area, locality/wider environment.

Educational visits, trips to museums and other places of interest.

Parental support in classrooms.

Class trips and whole school trips to places of interest connected with the curriculum.

Residential visits.

Reading and writing are always a high priority for us at King Street and we offer children many opportunities to develop these skills, we are passionate about putting writing into a context and making it real. We also understand the importance of building these skills from a very young age and we use the read, write inc scheme to help develop our phonic skills.
Design Technology
In line with our Creative Curriculum staff have organised through Taylor Shaw, our school lunch provider, for a 'Smoothie Bike' to come in to school in the summer term. This will link in with the food technology aspect of our curriculum and address healthy eating and food science.  Every year group will get to use the smoothie bike.
Art and Design 
To enhance our Creative Curriculum this year we have subscribed to an online art competition called Look and Learn Art. This will allow children to express their artistic skills, following a particular theme, using their favourite medium. WE are also working with the Town hall for Armed Forces day and will be designing an Anderson Shelter- keep checking our gallery to see the photos.
Music
We love music at King Street and we aim to get every child to have the experience of learning to sing and play a musical instrument throughout their time at primary school. All children will have access to the Charanga music scheme, which provides the opportunity to sing, compose and improvise. In addition, this year, our Year 3 children will be learning to play African drums, whilst Year 5 will be playing contemporary drums.  Children in Years 2, 4 and 6 will receive the opportunity to participate in Glee Club - singing their hearts out and performing for their peers! Our intent is that all children develop an appreciation for the history, composition and purpose of music, as well as their confidence in performing, composing and improvising.
MFL - Modern Foreign Languages
At King Street, we know how important it is for our children to understand and effectively communicate in the modern world. As a result, we are implementing a new French scheme this year, with the intent to provide all of our KS2 children with a basic knowledge and understanding, which they can build upon in subsequent years. We have also organised for pupils in Year 5 and 6 to receive additional French provision, in partnership with Whitworth School, in order to prepare them for their transition to secondary school.  In partnership with SMSC, the impact of this will be that children develop their awareness and understanding of, and appreciation for other cultures, as well as their confidence in speaking, reading and writing in a foreign language.
SMSC
SMSC stands for Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Learning. This is taught through our five weekly assemblies and through one PSHCE lesson per week (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Emotional Education). We have a curriculum map which all staff follow to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum and learning is presented in class floor books.

RE
Religious Education at King Street follows the Durham Agreed Syllabus. Pupils have one lesson of RE per week and study aspects of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Buddhism. We think the world is a very vibrant and interesting place and learning about the major world religions helps us to be tolerant global citizens.
 
Each class has an RE floor book to evidence their learning. Please ask the class teacher to show you it at any time!
 
During Summer Term, We are hoping to organise a Multi- Faith week with opportunities to meet representatives of different faiths and ask lots of questions!
Humanities
Geography and History are the driving force behind many of our class topics. Through both subjects, we hope to develop the children's understanding of the world around them - both past and present. We aim to foster a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world in which they live and develop a sense of place and appreciation for their cultural heritage.  Our focus this year is to raise the profile of local history and chronology. Look out for a timeline in the shared area soon! Furthermore, we developing the use of map and fieldwork skills. We have recently bought into Digimaps for schools to support this.
