Maths

In line with the National Curriculum Objectives for Mathematics, the intent of our Maths curriculum at King Street Primary and Pre-School is that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

We aim to create an engaging, safe, encouraging, and inclusive learning environment in which our students can develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, become fluent mathematicians, develop problem-solving and reasoning strategies, and develop the skills to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Our Maths curriculum will foster an environment of collaborative problem solving by encouraging students to think critically, reason logically, and become confident and resilient mathematicians

We aim to develop students who are able to apply their skills and knowledge of mathematics to real-world contexts and to become life-long learners whilst striving to inspire a love of mathematics and to help our students realise their potential as mathematicians.

Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. Pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge in other subjects such as Science, Geography, Design and Technology.

At King Street Primary and Pre-School, we use the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning as a planning tool and adapt it where necessary in accordance with the needs of our pupils at that time. White Rose Maths is a blocked scheme, which allows for depth and breadth of learning within each strand of mathematics and which allows clear progression through the school.
