King Street Primary

Year 5

Miss Lloyd is our Year 5 teacher. This is her eighth year at King Street Primary School. She has been teaching since 2010 and is looking forward to another exciting and busy year with Year 5!

Miss Lloyd loves History and Art and is the coordinator for Humanities, Art, Pupil Leadership and International Schools. She can't wait to get started with our new topic and find new and exciting ways to explore the curriculum.

The other adults working with us this year are Mrs Bott and Mr Murdoch.
Being in Year 5 means children wil get the opportunity to be part of our Pupil Leadership team this year. Children will choose to become part of the following groups: School Ambassadors, Community and Fundrasing, Environmental Ambassadors or International Ambassadors.
The whole class will get the opportunity to work via digital technology, with our partner school, The Center for Creative Education, in West Palm Beach as part of our curriculum this year.

Reading

  •  Reading is monitored daily and children should have their school reading book and record in school every day so we can listen to children read 1:1.
  • The expectation is that children read three times a week at home. They are welcome to fill in their own reading record but they are still required to have a parent signature.
  •  Reading books go home each night and are changed on  Monday.
  • We try to avoid changing books mid-week as this ensures the children have time to read and fully understand the texts. Despite not being very long, the topics are often much more sophisticated, and children require time to discuss and fully understand the theme of their book.
  • Please take the time to read with your child and focus on their understanding of the text by asking questions.
  • Each child has a reading loyalty card. If they read three times a week, they receive a stamp on their loyalty card. When they fill in one row, they receive a small treat/reward.

PE

We will have PE lessons on Monday and Thursday in Autumn term We will be doing Dance and Hockey.

Pupils will need tracksuit bottoms/shorts, a plain t-shirt in their house colour, trainers and may bring a sweatshirt. Long hair should be tied back and earrings taken out or covered for PE. PE kits should be sent with your child on a Monday and we will send them home on a Friday.

Curriculum

Our topic this term is ‘The Awesome Egyptians’. In English, we will be writing a variety of genres such as a non-chronological report about life in Ancient Egypt. We will also be writing our own adventure/mystery narrative in the first person. During reading lessons, we have begun studying the book ‘A Boy at the Back of the Class’. We have started to explore the front cover and first chapter this week and I am pleased to say that the children are already enthralled.

In Maths, we will begin by revisiting our knowledge of place value from Year 4 and extending our skills working with numbers up to 1 million. From there, we will move onto our addition and subtraction and multiplication and division units.

I am most excited about our history lessons, where we will find out about the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians. We’ll explore the importance of the River Nile, learn about tombs and pyramids, find out about hieroglyphics and discover lots of interesting information about gods, goddesses and afterlife beliefs.

Meanwhile, in Geography, our focus this term will be on locating countries and cities of the world.

In Science, our first topic is ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’ We will be investigating changes of state, reversible and irreversible changes and how to recover substances from a solution.

We will learn about three artists over the course of this year. In autumn term, we will be learning about Batik. Children will research Batik styles from around the world, experiment with colour and pattern to create their own designs on fabric. In DT, we will be thinking about seasonality of food around the world and in the UK and designing and making our own seasonal dish.
