Christmas in Year 1
What a wonderful December we have had!
Father John asked us to create a window display for one of the shops in Spennymoor. We had lots of fun doing this and linked it to the Christmas carol 'Silent Night'.
Everyone had a chance to use water colours to paint the picture. We then added some glittering stars.
We have completed lots of Christmas activities
We went to Church - before we went we created some Christingles and learned about what each part of the Christingle represents as part of RE. We also learned about the Nativity story and retold it. When we went to church for a Christingle service, Father John asked us lots of questions about the Nativity story and Christingles and was very impressed with our answers and how much we knew!
We had chance to design a Christmas T-Shirt. We loved using the fabric pens and planned out what we wanted our T-Shirt to look like before we used the fabric pens.
We have also had a go at some sewing. We stitched Christmas tree decorations and added glitter glue to decorate them. I bet you can't wait to see them!
One of our favourite activities was watching the Panto! This year we live streamed it. We had special treats while watching - popcorn and haribo!

I am so pleased to have followed you up to Year 1. I am so excited to teach you lots of new things and introduce you to the Year 1 curriculum.
In Year 1, we still have lots of lovely areas where we can continue our independent learning. We have a construction area, an art workshop, a role play area and a reading corner! We are very good at completing challenges so I am going to set you lots of new ones this year.
Our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Gamsby
Mrs Gamsby loves Art and can not wait to help you to create some masterpieces!
Reading books will be sent out on a Monday with reading records and should be returned every Friday. Children will be given 1 or 2 per week. Please make sure you sign your child's reading record so that we know they have read their books at home. It is also useful if you write a comment about how they did and if they struggled with any parts of the book. This ensures we can check progress and support them in school.
Please do not forget we have a wonderful reading resource called Rising Stars which the children can access at home. I can allocate books for the children to read at a suitable level. Rising Stars has lots of e-books and each book has a quiz at the end which the children love doing and this helps to check their understanding of the story.
The children will have spellings each week. These will go out in their home learning books each Monday and should be practised during the week ready for a spelling test each Friday.
Our PE day is a Thursday. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school. It may be useful to pop some jogging bottoms in their PE kit and a jacket for when it starts to get cold as we will be doing PE outdoors.
